URBANA - After a day of searching, frustrated Champaign Countyinvestigators said two children who disappeared Wednesday may be victims offoul play. `They (children) were here and then they weren't here,' Sheriff DavidDeskins said Thursday night. `There is no indication how they left.' `It's very frustrating knowing children are out there and we can't findthem,' said Sgt. Chuck Stroud, a sheriff's department detective. India Smith, 11, and her 4-year-old brother, Cody, vanished just before 2p.m. Wednesday. Their stepfather, Kevin Neal, said he last saw the childrenplaying in the side yard. Volunteers and police searched the area around the Knight Road houseWednesday and Thursday by foot, horseback, all-terrain vehicles and byhelicopter. The investigation, meanwhile, focused on Neal and the children'smother, Sue Neal. Both were given polygraph tests Thursday. The results were inconclusive andwill be sent to Columbus for further analysis by the state Bureau ofIdentification and Investigations. `It didn't prove they were lying and it didn't prove they were telling thetruth,' Stroud said. Kevin Neal complained that authorities were making it appear they wereinvolved with the disappearance. `We know our children would not just walk away,' he said. `They may havebeen picked up by someone they know or don't know... It's just one dead-end after another dead-end.' Deskins said polygraph tests are standard in missing children cases. Otherpolygraph tests are being planned for the children's fathers and grandparents. While authorities said the children may have met with foul play, Deskinssaid no one in the neighborhood saw a strange car and there's no evidence ofan abduction. Authorities searched the house and outbuildings at 1311 Knight Road, aswell as septic tanks and wells. Some areas have been searched more than once. Investigators with a search warrant combed through the Neals' home and wereseen removing a toy fire truck, a Monopoly game board and other items. Stroud said evidence was collected to get the fingerprints of the children.Other articles, such as hairbrushes, were taken to get DNA matches from theirhair, he said. Rick Smith, India's father, said authorities told him they have no leads.`Something's going on,' he said Thursday. `Something just is not right.' Smith described his daughter, who he has custody of, as a `good littlegirl' who helps out with the other children at the baby-sitters. `If someone's got them, please let them go,' he said. India is an above-average student at Urbana Local schools, Smith said. `I'malready real strict. The first time I let my guard down and this happens,' hesaid. Cody's father, Gary McGraw, said his son is happy-go-lucky and very closeto his sister.`Something ain't right,' he said. Neighbors were surprised that children could be missing or even abductedfrom such a quiet road out in the country. `It seems unreal. Nothing ever happens here. It's a quiet neighborhood,'said Rita Marsh, of 1272 Knight Road. Marsh said she didn't know the Neals, but hoped they would soon find thechildren. Harold Brown, of 1391 Knight Road, didn't know the children, but helpedlook for them. `It's scary. I'm real concerned,' Brown said. `I wouldn't expect this outhere.
