URBANA - Family and friends of two missing children have vowed to continuesearching though police have decided to stop looking for India Smith, 11, andCody Smith, 4. The children have been missing from their Champaign County home sinceWednesday and since then, police have searched a 15-mile radius for them. `I'll never stop until we find them,' Sue Neal, the children's mother, saidSunday. But she said she understood the decision by the Champaign County sheriff tocall off the search. `They have done all they can do. I thank everyone for all of theirsupport,' Neal said. Sheriff's Sgt. Chuck Stroud told a crowd of volunteers who helped searchthe area around the Neals' home at 1311 Knight Road that there was nothingelse the sheriff's office could do. `I'm out of places to go,' Stroud said, throwing up his hands. Stroud told the volunteers that if they continue the hunt on their own, anything they discover should be left undisturbed and reported to thesheriff's department. On two occasions Sunday, searchers thought they had discovered clues aboutthe children's disappearance. A night shirt was discovered in a gravel pit off Rogers Drive, about 1 1/2miles west of the Neals' home. Rick Smith, India's father, said it wasn't the shirt his daughter had beenwearing when she disappeared. Later, deputies examined some mounds of dirt that looked suspicious at asite off Prairie Road but found nothing. Sheriff David Deskins said he believes the area has been searchedthoroughly. The investigation now will concentrate on witness interviews and tips, hesaid. Deskins said investigators will consider several theories including apossible abduction. `The bottom line is there are no additional leads or information on wherethey are,' he said. Police also are re-examining some of the witness' statements. Sue and Kevin Neal, both, were questioned again by authorities Saturdaynight. Investigators are awaiting further results of the Neals' polygraphtests. Deskins said they are looking into inconsistencies in some of theirstatements. He said, however, that the Neals are not suspects in the disappearance ofthe children. On Saturday night, police towed away Sue Neal's car after she gave thempermission to search it. Police said there are some discrepancies in the Neals statements about thecar. Deskins said Sue Neal told investigators the car had been at her homeseveral days and wasn't operable. The car will be examined by the Ohio Bureauof Identification and Investigation. Cody's father, Gary McGraw, is expected to take a polygraph test today. Thetest was delayed because McGraw said he was taking medication. Rick Smith, India's father, already has taken a polygraph test. Dealing with police inquiries as well as their own concerns, the family isfrustrated by the lack of news about the children. McGraw cried uncontrollably at the Knight Road home Sunday. Deputies triedto comfort him, but he pushed them away. Over the last four days, some deputies have volunteered their time toassist in the search. Deputy Brad Randall - who has a 2-year-old son and a 7-year-old daughter -said he volunteered because he sympathizes with the family. Police now have issued different descriptions of what the children werelast seen wearing. India Smith was wearing a blue maternity-type shirt with the word `Baby'and the number 85 printed on it. The shirt is light blue with darker bluestripes and dark blue sleeves. She also wore navy blue shorts and sandals. She was not wearing hereyeglasses. She has a scar beneath her right eye and her ears were piercedtwice but she was not wearing earrings. Cody Smith has a pierced ear and long, reddish brown hair. He was wearingpurple, yellow and orange shorts with black trim, a sleeveless purple shirtand black and white tennis shoes. Anyone with information about the children is asked to call the ChampaignCounty sheriff's office at (937) 652-1311.LENGTH: 91 linesILLUSTRATION: PHOTO: SARAH BENNETT COX NEWS SERVICE An unidentified man on Sunday comforted Gary McGraw, the father of Cody Smith, one of the missing children.SUBJ: MISSING CHILDREN INVESTIGATION INTERVIEW NA: CODY SMITH INDIA SMITH ENHANCER: ref4
