Childs, who left three young daughters in the care of her relatives, wasconvicted April 28 in connection with a drug ring that authorities saidincluded her police officer husband and her cousin. Her husband's partner wasfound not guilty of similar charges. Childs' attorney, Charles Smiley Jr., said he will seek to have her freedon bond while he appeals her conviction. Montgomery County Common Pleas Judge Barbara P. Gorman, who sentencedChilds, denied an appeals bond, citing negative reports about Childs'performance while she was under house arrest with an electronic monitoringdevice. Childs will be eligible for shock probation in about six months, Smileysaid. Childs declined to speak to Gorman before sentencing, offering the judge aletter. Smiley declined to disclose the contents. Gorman told Childs, `I understand what you are saying and I sympathize withyou ... but as a police officer, you helped bring drugs back into thecommunity instead of protecting it. ... You never have shown any remorse.' Gorman ordered a pair of 4-to-15 year sentences for engaging in a patternof corrupt activity and conspiracy to engage in a pattern of corrupt activity,to be served at the same time but consecutive to another 4-to-15-year term forconspiracy to commit aggravated trafficking. A lesser charge of conspiracy tocommit aggravated trafficking got an 18-month sentence, to be served at thesame time as the other sentences. After Gorman issued the sentence, Childs' mother, Sharon Jackson, collapsedin the back of the courtroom. Security guards assisted her to the hallwaywhere she later met with Smiley. Rick Hanes, assistant county prosecutor, said, `I'm satisfied with it - asmuch as I can with a law enforcement officer being involved in something likethis.' Hanes and assistant county prosecutor Paul Folfas charged that DineahChilds acted as go-between for her husband and his partner, who were accusedof taking drugs from people while on their bicycle patrols, and her cousin,Sean Orlando Pauley, who, with others, sold the stolen drugs on the street. Childs' husband, Charles F. Childs, was convicted in August on one count ofdrug trafficking and has served his sentence. Charles Childs' partner, WilliamEric Bailey, was found not guilty on all charges and has returned to thepolice department. Pauley pleaded guilty in March to engaging in a pattern of corruptactivity.
