The family, headed by Virginia W. Kettering, 87, was cited for more than $28 million in gifts to various arts organizations over the years, most recently $7 million toward restoration of the Victoria Theatre and $4 million to the Dayton Art Institute's campaign for major capital improvements. Other beneficiaries have included Dayton Opera, Dayton Philharmonic Orchestra, Dayton Contemporary Dance Company, Human Race Theatre Company, Victoria Theatre Association, Arts Center Foundation, Dayton Performing Arts Fund, Arts in Middletown, Arts Unlimited/Bowling Green and Playhouse Square Foundation/Cleveland. Lorna Dawes, executive director of The Muse Machine, prepared the nomination. Albert W. Leland, vice president in the trust department at Bank One, Dayton, received the award in Columbus on behalf of Mrs. Kettering. Dawes' nomination described how the Kettering gifts displayed "the ability to grasp a vision and spark the excitement and commitment of others to help make dreams a reality." The Ohio Arts Council itself received a $50,000 Kettering gift for an international program, the nomination said. The Kettering fortune was founded by Charles F. Kettering, Dayton inventor and General Motors executive. Virginia W. Kettering is the widow of his son, Eugene. The honorees today were for: * Arts administration - Columbus Association for the Performing Arts. * Arts in education - Joseph V. Canzani, Columbus, and Fitton Center for Creative Arts, Hamilton. * Arts outreach - Ariel Cultural and Performing Arts Center, Gallipolis. * Arts Patron - Charles F. Kettering Family, Dayton. * Business support of the arts - Bank One, Youngstown. * Government support of the arts - City of Columbus. * Individual artists - Henry Halem, Kent, and Viktor Schreckengost, Cleveland. * Media support of the arts - the Journal News, Hamilton.
